What was the mother eating in the movie Precious in one scene..?

it was the scene were precious is making her mother dinner and her
mother is sitting watching tv and asking her where she was and why she
isnt going to welfare. they are both in white shirts and its about 40
minutes into the movie. the mother keeps crackling some kind of candy
thing i think and then eating it, she is also drinking sunkist if that
helps.. anybody know?
