Few new discoveries in SAG TV noms
The smallscreen side of the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations revealed how much familiarity bred comfort among voters. Breakthroughs were rare and even then involved widely known thesps. The sole exception to this was drama actor Patrick J. Adams, who plays Mike Ross on first-year USA series "Suits." He will compete against four TV veterans: Kyle Chandler ("Friday Night Lights"), Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter") and defending champ Steve Buscemi ("Boardwalk Empire"). In a year that brought such lauded perfs as Claire Danes' work in "Homeland," it was instead an "American Horror Story" actress that earned a SAG nom -- and not even series lead Connie Britton, but rather supporting player and Hollywood mainstay Jessica Lange. She was chosen alongside fellow familiar freshman Kathy Bates of "Harry's Law," Glenn Close of "Damages," Kyra Sedgwick of "The Closer" and the most recent SAG honoree, Julianna Marguiles of "The Good Wife." No thesps from new series found their way into the comedy acting noms at all. On the guys' side, Alec Baldwin, who has won five years in a row, again was nominated alongside 2011 Emmy winner Ty Burrell of "Modern Family," Burrell's co-star Eric Stonestreet, "The Office" expatriate Steve Carell and Jon Cryer of "Two and a Half Men." Jim Parsons, who has won the past two lead comedy actor Emmys, has yet to earn a SAG nom. The comedy actress noms barely changed from the last go-round, with current title-holder Betty White ("Hot in Cleveland") and returning nominees Edie Falco ("Nurse Jackie"), Tina Fey ("30 Rock") and Sofia Vergara ("Modern Family") joined by Julie Bowen ("Modern Family"), who won for supporting actress at this year's Emmys. Similarly, "Game of Thrones" -- which listed 32 members in its ensemble -- was the only first-year series to earn a drama or comedy nom. "Boardwalk Empire," "Breaking Bad," "Dexter" and "The Good Wife" grabbed the other drama spots, while comedy features "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," defending champ "Modern Family," "30 Rock" and "The Office," the latter two NBC vets holding off Thursday-nightmates "Community" and "Parks and Recreation." On the movies and miniseries docket, "Appropriate Adult," which only premiered Stateside on Sundance Channel this past Saturday after a September bow in the U.K., nevertheless yielded a female actor nomination for Emily Watson. She was tapped along with Diane Lane (HBO's "Cinema Verite"), Maggie Smith (PBS' "Downton Abbey"), Kate Winslet (HBO's "Mildred Pierce") and yet another nod for White (CBS' "Hallmark Hall of Fame: The Lost Valentine"). HBO performers nabbed all but one slot among actors in movies and miniseries, with Laurence Fishburne ("Thurgood"), Paul Giamatti and James Woods ("Too Big To Fail") and Guy Pearce ("Mildred Pearce") up against Greg Kinnear of "The Kennedys," which aired on Reelz. The Lucky One Poster: Zac Efron Pouts for Love
The next Nicholas Sparks joint, The Lucky One, comes out April 20, but Zac Efron gives us everything we need to survive the five-month wait — namely, a killer pout. He stars in The Lucky One as an Iraq War vet who comes home to locate the unknown woman who served as his “good luck charm during the war.” In the film’s poster, he appears to have found her: Taylor Schilling, of the unfairly canceled NBC drama Mercy, stands in frame. Pretty damn Notebook-y all around. Awwwww, yeah. Give me more of that ultra-preened scruff, Efron. I bet he’d look good in Chris Daughtry’s parabolic sideburns too. Or better yet: no facial hair at all. Does this need to be explained? When you’re Mattel hot, embrace Mattel hot. Amen. But good for Schilling! She was likable and very funny on Mercy. I’m sensing some Bad Movie We Love potential in The Lucky One, and I don’t want to be let down. Or actually impressed. That would be the worst. ‘The Lucky One’ [MovieWeb]

To the characteristics
'We Have to Discuss Kevin''Senna''Shame''Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy'There's a familiar feel for this year's British Independent Film Honours, using the nominations centered by past those who win by companies for example Warp, Working Title, See-Saw and Studiocanal which have a powerful history in the ceremony. All five candidates for the best film -- "We have to Discuss Kevin," "Senna," "Shame," "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Tyrannosaur" -- are directed by individuals who curently have a BIFA on the mantelpiece.Lynne Ramsay, Asif Kapadia and Steve McQueen won BIFAs for debut director, while Tomas Alfredson required the foreign film prize and Paddy Considine won for brief.Ben Wheatley, who replaces Kapadia alongside another four within this year's director list for his sophomore pic "Kill List," is another previous champion of BIFA's Raindance Award for his rookie effort "Lower Terrace."The nominees for debut director aren't exactly fresh-faced unknowns. Considine, Rob Fiennes for "Coriolanus," Richard Ayoade for "Submarine," Joe Cornish for "Attack the Block" and John Michael McDonagh for "The Guard" are established talents, either as entertainers, authors or both, who moved in to the feature director's chair the very first time this season. But lest the BIFAs be charged with losing their edge and just rounding up a cosy cabal of usual suspects, several eminent past those who win happen to be overlooked within the cold, without any room for Andrea Arnold's "Wuthering Levels," Terence Davies' "The Dark Blue Ocean," Ken Loach's "Route Irish" or Michael Winterbottom's "Trishna."Actually, it may be contended the familiarity of the year's nominees isn't a manifestation of conservatism, but simply that British indie filmmaking is ageing, using the best talent getting a greater consistency of support to construct their careers as well as their audience. Possibly the BIFAs have simply developed using the industry. There is an abundance of boldness and originality of these nominees -- yet their risktaking has additionally been compensated by having an encouraging and surprising amount of commercial success."Mess," "Senna," "Kevin" and "Guard" are some of the year's most critical breakthrough hits in the U.K. box office. "Shame" has not yet been launched, but responses in the London Film Festival claim that it's set for the same result."Attack the Block" fell lacking its high anticipation, while "Kill List" and "Tyrannosaur" both unsuccessful to locate a significant cinema audiences, but one of the other nominees, "Jane Eyre," "Submarine" and doc "TT3D: Nearer to the advantageInch all published healthy box office returns. However, there is no room in the BIFAs for that year's most amazing indie success story, "The Inbetweeners Movie," which made $74 million within the U.K. and met with critical acclaim. This is a striking omission, considering that it had been produced beginning with-time feature authors along with a debut director, precisely the type of talent the BIFAs were produced 14 years back to advertise. Possibly the committee -- composed of 70 industry pros -- felt that the TV spinoff didn't merit recognition like a work of cinema. That's only some of the curious decision among the 2010 nominations. Giladi tapped as Icon U.K. CEO
LONDON -- Aviv Giladi has been tapped as CEO of Access Industries' Icon U.K. Group. The appointment, which is effective immediately, will see Giladi oversee Icon U.K.'s entire operations, including its Brit distribution arm, Icon Film Distribution, Icon Home Entertainment, international sales arm Icon Entertainment Intl. and London-based Majestic Films and Television. Giladi's appointment is expected to herald Icon's shift toward a more production focused business, which will aim to finance projects sitting around the $15 million to $20 million mark. Sources indicate that the group is currently in talks to back Paul Greengrass' upcoming project "Memphis," about the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, which Universal Pictures dropped earlier this year. Giladi is currently chairman of Israeli media group R.G.E. Group, which specializes in a variety of content and production activities, and produces and operates TV channels in Israel. He controls 33% of the company, alongside Access Industries' Russian billionaire owner Len Blavatnik, who also has a 33% stake in R.G.E. Giladi also sits on the board of Ealing Studios, in which he serves as non-executive director. The appointment comes in the light of a series of changes expected to unfold over the upcoming months with Icon U.K's strained business. In October, Variety reported that Blighty's film biz had been abuzz with reports that Access, which bought Icon's U.K. operations two years ago, was shopping the company's U.K. library to potential buyers following the distrib's recent weak performance in the market (Weekly Variety, Oct. 29). It is believed that Giladi has been one of the key figures, along with Access' European Counsel Thomas Harding, behind managing the potential sale of Icon's U.K. library to buyers. As recently as a few weeks ago, this U.K. library was still being shopped to buyers with Access showing interest in selling this fraction of the biz if the price was right. While Giladi's appointment is positive in a sense that it seems there is movement and direction happening within the group, it is still unclear what will happen to the group's Brit distrib arm and equally unclear as to what will happen to the positions of joint managing directors Hugo Grumbar and Ian Dawson. Sources indicate that, so far, no one has yet ankled the company, but as is typical when gears shift within a company, there may be casualties. Further changes are expected to be announced within the company soon. Blavatnik's Access Industries purchased Icon U.K. Group in November 2009 and placed former PolyGram and UIP topper Stewart Till at the helm. Till's intention to set up Icon as an international distribution network was thwarted when he could not find suitable acquisitions in Italy, Spain, France and Germany at a realistic price. In November 2010, Till sidestepped to chairman of Icon, and Grumbar and Dawson stepped up to the plate managing the international sales division and U.K. operation respectively. HFPA say film noms not star driven
Depp'The Iron Lady'JolieFor many years there has often been an interesting correlation between star wattage and those actors who continually receive Golden Gobe nominations. While the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. takes the firm position that its members are not starstruck and an actor's place in Hollywood hierarchy doesn't mean anything when it comes to who'll appear at the org's kudocast, the list of recent noms may prove otherwise. On the distaff side, Angelina Jolie has made the HFPA swoon recently. She's been nominated three times in the last four years: "The Tourist," "Changeling" and "A Mighty Heart." Interestingly, she has won three times and two were for TV projects: "George Wallace" and "Gia." Her third victory was for 1999's "Girl, Interrupted."Johnny Depp, her co-star on "The Tourist," has been a Golden Globe fave for decades. The actor has been nominated 10 times, but won only once for the 2007 pic "Sweeney Todd." He was first nominated in 1991 for "Edward Scissorhands" and in January was not only nominated for "The Tourist," but for "Alice in Wonderland" as well. Then there is the all-time nomination champ, Meryl Streep. Though she may not make the pages of the tabloids that are often filled with photos of Depp and Jolie, Streep is clearly Hollywood royalty. She was been nominated a staggering 25 times and, among those nods, has won seven times,The new HFPA president Aida Takla-O'Reilly, a correspondent for two publications in Dubai who served previously as HFPA prexy in the 1990s, says she has heard the criticism of the org being taken under by the spell of celebs but doesn't believe it is a valid assertion.Actors, she explains, are a reflection of their respective films. So if the movie succeeds, so have the thesps. Yet, on the other hand, if the pic is a failure, the actors shouldn't come away with noms."No matter how big the star is, if the movie doesn't do to you what it sets out to do to you, we pick up on that right away," Takla-O'Reilly."The Tourist," which received mixed reviews, was the poster boy last year for criticism that the HFPA was taken under Jolie and Depp's spell. Takla-O'Reilly, however, was an unabashed fan and doesn't make any excuses for both the film and star's nominations."If a movie sets out to do something and succeeds in what it sets out to do, it is a good movie," she says. "This movie did not set out to espouse a political issue or a social issue. This was good old-fashioned entertainment, and I loved it."GOLDEN GLOBES PREVIEWRicky didn't lose their number | Peace for a time as org and prodco collaborate | No-limit rule a boon for global pic parade | HFPA denies being starstruck in noms process | Marketing strategies can shift at Globes time | No rest for the bleary-eyed | New kids on the block Contact the Variety newsroom at news@variety.com

Grimm
'Grimm'Filmed in Portland by GK Prods. and Hazy Mills Prods. in association with Universal Television. Executive producers, David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf, Todd Milliner, Sean Hayes, Naren Shankar, Norberto Barba, Marc Buckland; producer, Steve Oster; director, Buckland; writers, Greenwalt, Kouf; story by Greenwalt, Kouf, Stephen Carpenter.Det. Nick Burkhardt - David Giuntoli
Hank Griffin - Russell Hornsby
Juliette Silverton - Bitsie Tulloch
Monroe - Silas Weir Mitchell Robert Greenblatt helped develop "The X-Files" at Fox, which originally scheduled the show at 9 p.m. Fridays. So it's easy to see the attraction with the exec now running NBC Entertainment of taking a flyer on another horror concept, "Grimm," in the same slot. By happenstance, this NBC series arrives the same week as ABC's considerably more interesting "Once Upon a Time," another fairy-tale themed project. Yet given the various timeslots where NBC is bedeviled by Nielsen gremlins, aggressively programming Fridays looks like a luxury the network can ill afford. The central character, Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli), is a detective who's planning to propose to his girlfriend (Bitsie Tulloch). Soon enough, though, his bliss is interrupted by visions, as he begins seeing people's faces morph into monsters -- a legacy of being descended from the Brothers Grimm, cursed with the task of thwarting the mythical creatures actually walking among us. "The misfortune of our family is already passing to you," Nick's aunt (Kate Burton) tells him, by way of obliquely explaining the strange spells Nick is suddenly experiencing. The first threat is a predator with an appetite for young women wearing red-hooded sweatshirts (get it?), which is modestly clever and creepy. Still, as with any show of this variety, there's the haunting problem of exhausting viable monsters and spiraling into silliness (otherwise known as "The Night Stalker" syndrome), as well as doubts as to whether the backstory mythology provides enough of a foundation to support an ongoing storyline. Even before this season's double dose, the "Fairy tales are real" idea has certainly been around the block a few times -- played for laughs, for example, in "Special Unit 2." Among "Grimm's" more immediate challenges are Giuntoli's initial blandness as its lead, along with questions regarding how long his confused partner ("Lincoln Heights'" Russell Hornsby) can continue showing up at crime scenes without ascertaining something's weird in the state of Oregon. As veterans of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel," producers David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf are familiar with reluctant heroes protecting people from things that go bump in the night. A more practical concern is whether there's enough audience for "Grimm" on Fridays -- a night where all but CBS' older-skewing dramas have struggled to achieve any kind of critical mass -- and the mission is exacerbated by Fox's "Fringe" targeting the same audience. Taking those factors into account, even if this macabre hour can locate its narrative groove and doesn't run out of palatable foes by, oh, episode six, the outlook still looks pretty, er, grim.Camera, Clark Mathis; production designer, Paul Eads; editor, Chris Willingham; music, Richard Marvin; casting, Donna Rosenstein, Kendra Castleberry. 60 MIN.With: Reggie Lee, Sasha Roiz, Kate Burton, Tim Bagley. There's very little reference to the Zorro, Muskteers, or ninjas beyond this opening gag, nevertheless it seems to boil lower the ludicrousness of Paul W.S. Analyst on Netflix: 'The More Humbled Management Team Will Be More Thoughtful'
NY - Keeping a "buy" rating on Netflix's stock, Goldman Sachs analyst Ingrid Chung said Monday that the company's decision to abandon plans to separate its DVD-by-mail from its streaming business will have positive effects on subscriber trends. Netflix recently had announced it would create Qwikster.com as a separate destination for DVD rentals. After negative subscriber and Wall Street feedback, the company early Monday withdrew its plan, with CEO Reed Hastings saying the decision was made too quickly. Netflix's stock rose in early trading. "While today's retreat from separating the Web sites shows how little testing had gone into the launch of Qwikster, we believe that the more humbled management team will be more thoughtful going forward," Chung wrote in a report. She called Monday's news "a significant positive," highlighting what she said would be "better visibility into fourth-quarter subscriber metrics." Explained Chung: had the company gone ahead and divided its services, "we believe they could have lost the majority of the 12 million hybrid subscribers, representing roughly half of U.S. subscribers, the company currently has." Also, the reversal shows that "management is listening to its customers (finally) and working to fix its relationship with customers," Chung said. She said she doesn't believe that Netflix was compelled to make the move because of additional subscriber losses in the last two weeks of the third quarter. "Even if there was additional churn in the third quarter, it will be more than made up for by the number of hybrid subs that will now stay with the service," she suggested. Help Cast 'Dr. Sleep,' Stephen King's Sequel to 'The Shining'
Oh, Uncle Stephen, you had us at pirate vampires. Stephen King has confirmed longstanding rumors that he's working on a sequel to 'The Shining' called 'Dr. Sleep.' The book will feature a now-middle-aged Danny Torrance, a hospice full of dying patients, and, yes, those aforementioned pirate vampires -- a tribe of buccaneers who suck up psychic energy instead of blood from clairvoyants like Danny. Naturally, we're not only breathless with anticipation for the book, but also for the inevitable movie version. In an effort to get a jump on 'Dr. Sleep: The Movie,' Moviefone has a bevy of suggestions for casting and directing that will ensure the movie will be a worthy follow-up to the classic 1980 Stanley Kubrick take on 'The Shining.' On Wednesday, King confirmed news of 'Dr. Sleep' on his website, some two years after he'd first hinted at plans of a 'Shining' sequel. Over the weekend, in an appearance at George Mason University, King discussed the book and read a passage from it. He said he'd always wondered what happened to 'The Shining's haunted, psychic child after he grew up, and that he finally decided to figure that out by writing a sequel. In the yet-unfinished 'Dr. Sleep,' Danny is now a 40-year-old man working in a hospice, where he uses his gift to ease dying patients over to the other side. King explained: This kinda goes back to: what';s the worst thing that you can think of?... I knew that there were bad people in this story that were like vampires, only that what they sucked out was not blood, but psychic energy from special people like Danny Torrance. And I came to realize that these people were called The Tribe and that they move around a lot, and that their leader is a woman who calls herself Rose the Hat. They all have these kinda pirate names, because pirates is sort of what they are. Stephen King Discusses 'Dr. Sleep' There's no publishing date in place yet, much less a movie deal, but c'mon, you know there'll be a film version. After all, there's been a film version of nearly every other King title, and many of those King movies were made by ace directors -- Kubrick, David Cronenberg, Rob Reiner, Frank Darabont, Taylor Hackford -- and are considered classics. Of course, King was famously unhappy with Kubrick's version of 'The Shining,' so much so that he produced a TV miniseries version that he felt was more faithful to the book. Still, the best way to keep King and his legions of fans happy is to make sure top-notch people are attached to the big-screen adaptation. Some names to consider... CASTING • Edward Norton. Think of him as the tormented, split-personality killer in 'Primal Fear' or the sleepless, hollow-eyed protagonist of 'Fight Club.' This shouldn't be a stretch. • Michael Shannon. Seen him on 'Boardwalk Empire' lately? He does haunted and dangerously obsessive very well, something he expands on in this week's 'Take Shelter.' • Philip Seymour Hoffman. He's already played a part like this in 'Magnolia,' only with a plague of frogs instead of pirate vampires. Plus, dude can do pretty much anything. • Michael Fassbender. He can be menacing (see him as Magneto in 'X-Men: First Class,'), but as his Mr. Rochester in 'Jane Eyre' proves, he can glower and brood magnificently. • Elijah Wood. In case the filmmakers want to play up the saucer-eyed, child-man aspects of the character, they should look to Frodo. Stephen King Reads from 'Dr. Sleep' DIRECTING • David Cronenberg. Yes, he's already done a Stephen King movie. Of course, 'The Dead Zone' was 30 years ago, and he's only gotten better with age. • Alfonso Cuarón. The first-rate fantasy director who introduced us to the Dementors in the 'Harry Potter' saga shouldn't have much trouble with psychic energy-sucking vampires. • Gore Verbinski. He knows his pirates. Plus, his first name is Gore -- he should be directing nothing but horror movies. • Kathryn Bigelow. Back before she was an Oscar-winning, all-war-movies-all-the-time director, she made a gem of a vampire movie, the too-little-seen 'Near Dark.' She should take another crack at horror. • Sam Raimi. After he finishes 'Oz: The Great and Powerful,' the erstwhile 'Evil Dead' and 'Spider-Man' director will have a lot of time on his hands. He's a horror innovator, and he's obviously very comfortable with sequels. H/T to Slashfilm and The AV Club. Follow Gary Susman on Twitter @garysusman.
